How is Yugioh Edison Format Different from the current TCG?
The format has notable differences from the current modern TCG gameplay. A list of specific changes include:
- Allowing the starting player to draw a card during the first turn, beginning the duel with 6 cards.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, the first player does not get to draw a card during the Draw Phase of the first turn.
- There is a concept known Ignition Effect Priority, which grants the turn player “priority” to activate effects as a Chain Link 1 when Summoning a monster without starting a chain. Conversely, the turn player does not get priority if the Summon performed starts a chain.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, Ignition Effect Priority has been removed, allowing Summons that do not start a chain to be responded to by the opponent starting a Chain Link 1.
- Simultaneous Effects Go On Chain (SEGOC), which normally dictate how card effects that trigger at the same time can be resolved, have a specific flow in which they must be resolved. Mandatory Effects from the turn player, and then the opponent are forced be activated as earlier effects before optional effects from the turn player (and then the opponent) can be activated. With the 2008 Master Rule ruleset, there is an additional “Early Trigger” layer to this, which can override the standard SEGOC order by forcing effects that happen first to be triggered first.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, using SECOG, players can determine the order they wish for mandatory trigger effects to be activated.
- The Damage Step has a complex 7-step process for proceeding (Start of Damage Step, Flip Set Face-Up, Effects that apply before Damage Calculation, Effects that apply during Damage Calculation, effects that apply after Damage Calculation, Resolving activated effects, and then ending the Damage Step), which follows certain rules, such as:
- Counter Traps, Mandatory Effects, and Monster Effects that negate activation being able to be activated at any point.
- Spell Speed 2 Spell/Traps that negate activations or effects cannot be activated.
- However, effects can be activated if the card itself moves location (such as being flipped face-up or sent to the Graveyard) or when performing an action such as destroying a monster or inflicting battle damage.
- Fast Effects and Continuous Effects which modify ATK/DEF can also activate/apply.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, a simplified 5-step process is used, which involves activating effects that apply at the start of the Damage Step, then before Damage Calculations, then performing the Damage Calculation, and then activating effects that occur after Damage Calculation before reaching the end of the Damage Step).
- There only being one Field Spell that can be active at a time. If another Field Spell is activated (not counting Set cards), the existing face-up Field Spell is destroyed (where possible).
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, both players can activate Field Spells without affecting the other card’s existence.
- Mandatory Trigger Effects that activate during specific phases, such as the effect of Spirit Monsters or Lightsworn Monsters, will activate again if they are negated by one-time effects. This does not apply to continuous negation provided by cards such as Skill Drain.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, mandatory trigger effects are only triggered once, and do not re-trigger if negated by one-time effects.
- Monster Cards can only be equipped with one Union Monster at a time.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, monsters can be equipped with multiple Union Monsters simultaneously.
- Trap Monsters are treated as also occupying a Spell/Trap Zone while occupying a Monster Zone, and can be returned to the Spell/Trap Zone upon being negated or being Set with an effect like Book of Moon.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, Trap Monsters do not occupy a Spell/Trap Zone while face-up in the Monster Zone.
- End of Turn Discards (from the Hand Size limit being exceeded) cannot be responded to, and must be the last action a player performs in a turn, unless they contain mandatory effects that start a chain. In this case, Spell Speed 2 effects can be chained only if they negate activations or effects, with Spell Speed 3 effects always being able to be activated.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, Spell Speed 2 effects that do not negate activations or effects can be activated in response to a mandatory effect being triggered from a discard.
- When two monsters with 0 ATK battle each other, both monsters are destroyed.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, neither monster is destroyed.
- When an Infinite Loop is created by involuntary means, a procedure occurs where players/the judge must determine the primary cause of the loop and send them to the Graveyard by game mechanics. Players cannot play effects that would intentionally cause an infinite loop.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, intentional infinite loops can be activated, but only if there is a net change after each cycle is resolved. In this case, the loop will continue until either the Duel ends or the effect ceases to have a net change (in which case, the primary cause of the loop is destroyed by game mechanics).
- Due to the time period the format is set in, all cards must use the text of the latest printings as of April 24, 2010, known as their Pre-Errata versions.
- In the current 2020 Master Rule 5 ruleset, cards that have had their effects changed due to intentional erratas or incidental text changes that affect their effects must use the latest text as seen in the Yugioh Database.
